Grand Muscat
"After 20 plus years in the making Warrabilla have finally been able produce a Grand Muscat, the fortified that Rutherglen is famous for. Together with his assistant winemaker, daughter Amy, Andrew Sutherland Smith has crafted an outstanding Grand Muscat that is a fitting tribute to his family heritage. With an average age of 18 years, the only bad news is that production is tiny with only 200 bottles scheduled to be released each year.
Very deep sienna brown colour with a distinctive olive green hue. Heady aromatics of honeyed raisins, Christmas cake and rancio characters overlay hints of marmalade, toffee and marzipan with perfectly integrated spirit. Magnificently rich and concentrated with a viscous textural feel akin to motor oil the palate is layered with luscious Christmas cake, honey, dried raisins, marmalade infusions, rancio characters and marzipan. The wine is fortifed on skins which extracts a bit more tannin and tends to dry out the finish so it doesn’t end with a cloying sweetness. Excellent integration of spirit with a long powerful conclusion of honeyed raisins, Christmas cake, marmalade, marzipan and subtle nutty rancio characters. Very limited stocks. 98 points" Courtesy of Nicks Wine Merchants.
